Mucositis Tuesday (Day 12 Cycle 4)

Schedule today:
  • 9:30am visiting nurse Erin
  • 2pm doctor appointment with primary care to get flu, COVID & strep test
  • Kim & Bob to Eastman
  • 4pm Dana Farber calls back & puts in prescription for Magic Mouthwash

Summer’s throat continues to really bother her. It’s sore and raw and she’s developed a cold sore on her tongue. Temperature 99.6 so we are on alert.  She’s in continued communication with Dr. Parry’s office, who after the visiting nurse came, decided they wanted her to go to a doctor to get a flu, Covid & strep test to rule them out.  They we’re pretty sure this was a side effect from the chemo treatment called mucositis.

Mucositis is the painful inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract, usually as an adverse effect of  chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment for cancer.[1] Mucositis can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, but oral mucositis refers to the particular inflammation and ulceration that occurs in the mouth. Oral mucositis is a common and often debilitating complication of cancer treatment.[2]

Luckily they were able to get an appointment with Summer’s primary care physician at 2pm. All the tests came back negative so Dana Farber prescribed Magic Mouthwash which will numb her mouth and throat- hopefully providing comfort.  Summer’s primary care was happy to see her. πŸ₯Ή

  1. Summer,
I hope that the sunrise saw your temp back to normal and your sore throat gone! When I was young, every year I got tonsillitis. To relieve my pain my father would paint (literally with Q-tips) my tonsils with Irish Whiskey. Jamison’s. Imagine that!
    Mouthwash sounds much more civilized!
Lol, your wigs! Lia came back from UMASS with a mullet. Yep, one silly session with scissors in a dorm room. Luckily, like you, Lia can pull off any look! ✂️

  2. Wow, Summer looks amazing in the wigs and is quite the presenter! Bummer about the Mucositis. What next! The numbers were interesting but pretty comparable to past results patterns, I suspect. So normal. Tough kid! Hopefully the new mouthwash will do it’s job soon. Bob and Kim have their Thanksgiving supper picked out already. He was maintaining his ground though. Keep up the good spirts all, Love, R&B
