Monday PM Update: The Diagnosis is Here

 

Summer actually spent some time out of bed this morning &  was “enjoying a new vantage point/view out the window” as she kicked back in her lazy boy lounger.  The doctors said during their rounds today that Summer is looking great - everyone was pleased with how well she slept last night. They want to do an ultrasound on Summer’s legs today due to some swelling as a precaution for blot clots.  All normal.

We also met with Summer’s doctors this afternoon and have the final results from the biopsy. Summer has been diagnosed with primary mediastinal lymphoma. She is going to start chemo tomorrow morning. She will be receiving 5 days of chemo for 6 cycles. Each cycle is 21 days. That means she’ll be in treatment for about 4 months (126 days). They want to keep her in the hospital for at least this first 5 days of the cycle while she is receiving chemo and then assess how her heart and blood count are doing on Saturday.  Fingers crossed she might even come home some time next week.

Again the doctor stressed that this is extremely treatable and that the numbers are in our favor.  Most cases in young people like Summer, once gone don’t come back.  Music to our ears!!

While this is what they’ve prepped us for all week, hearing the actual diagnosis was pretty overwhelming.  Summer is emotional and anxious about the chemotherapy & side effects, but says she’s motivated & ready to fight this.
